Joel Gott, a Wine Whore who knows how to make a kick-ass burger!
We have all been there. After hours of drinking wine, beer, liquor, or whatever the heck your favorite alcoholic beverage happens to be, you realize that your stomach needs some love.
Be careful! This is a critical turning point.
My mother once told me some important words of wisdom. She said "If the room starts to spin, don't go to sleep. Grab a bite to eat!" Thank you Mom for encouraging me to become the Wine Whore I am today... I love you! More importantly, thank you for helping me discover one of the best places to cure the drunken munchies and oddly enough, a great bottle of Zin.
This Napa Valley burger stand goes by the name Taylor's Refresher. Famous Wine Whore, Robert Parker, declared that Taylor's double cheeseburger was his "most memorable meal of 1999." Although I doubt that Robert would remember much of his visit if he was as toasted as I was when I made this stop, after dinning on the benches of this casually gourmet establishment, this Wine Whore dizzily nods in agreement!
It is not all burgers and fries for the owner of this burger stand. When owner Joel Gott isn't running one of his many Napa businesses, he is busy crafting some of California's best Zinfandel.
That being said, let's get down to drinkin'!
After tasting a bottle of Gott Zinfandel, I am excited to announce that Joel knows how to do much more than make a kick-ass burger. His Zinfandel is so good, it deserves more than just the title of Wise Wine... it deserves a good meal.

Wine Geek Vintage Info:
"Dry-farmed, old-head-trained vines in Lodi and Amador produce intense, structured fruit while the Napa Valley harvest adds power, depth and complexity. Fruit from the cooler climate of Sonoma County offers classic Zinfandel aromatics of pepper and anise. Together, these diverse regions produce a Zinfandel packed with flavors of licorice, plums, Bing cherries and blackberries with a deep, long finish." –Joel Gott

Recommended Food Pairing:
As a tribute to the great greasy goodies served at Taylor's Refresher, I recommend pairing this wine with a sloppy cheeseburger, succulent pulled pork sandwich, and a basket piled high with chili cheese fries! This award winning combo not only goes well with the wine but also helps prevent your vino buzz from painfully bleeding into the following morning.

My Palate Party...
To the eye:
Deep ruby red stained by swirling hints of jam.
To the nose:
Bursting with fruit and jam wrapped like a burrito in a leather tortilla.
On the tongue:
Sweet and fruity with a sprinkle of spice which fades with a long fun finish like a great night of drinks with friends.
This wine is great for all of the same reasons that I enjoy Joel Gott's California eateries. It is relatively easy to find, casual and fun, and most importantly, you get some excellent bang for the buck.
For less than $20, this vino is a great value! Enjoyable and fun, this wine is ready to party. Like a meal at Taylor's Refresher, this Zinfandel proves that you don't have to spend a fortune to have a good time!
Get yourself a bottle and experience the fun firsthand!

Two days after extending the Whore-Off challenge to social media guru, Gary Vaynerchuk, I actually received a response. My letter elicited the following note from the wine guru himself which also included a well integrated plug for his new book:
Randy sorry man I have been a tad MiA I will look at it this weekend

In the meantime, another Wine Whore DID step up to partake in the challenge:

The Prince of Wine has offered to participate in the Whore-Off and broadcast it on Ustream.tv. Expect some good news this week... Stay tuned!

Which bottle would you drink first?
Last week I tested the price of air. This week, I have decided to simply ask 'which one would you choose?' For this week's poll, I am asking you to decide which bottle to taste based on a generic description.
Taking last week's poll one step further, I am not going to provide any information or any other detailed wine info. Instead, I am asking that you choose which one is your favorite based on generic descriptions by voting for your choice in the poll located at the top of this page. The winning wine will be announced, tasted and featured in a review comparing your pick and whether the price makes a real difference in my tasting experience.

Be sure to follow me on Twitter or Facebook Wednesday night @ 6:30m pm ET for my tweets as I open and taste the wine that you have picked. This is your chance to ask me questions or just get a sneak peak at my review. The more the merrier, so tell all of your wine loving friends to stop by, vote, and join the party. In the meantime, take a minute to mark your calendar with next week’s tasting (Wednesday @ 6:30pm ET) and then prepare yourself for the fun by checking out the previous winners.
Cheers!
Here are the choices...
Choice #1
- Over $30 Russian River Valley Petite Sirah
Choice #2
- "Sustainable" California Red Wine
Choice #3
- California Chardonnay for less than $10
Choice #4

Wine Whore Review
Dear Gary,
I am inspired by your words and the motivation behind what you do:
"I want to make sure this generation of wine drinkers isn't elitist and snotty. I want it to be about family and bringing people together." -Gary Vaynerchuck
In addition to our love for the grape, we have a lot in common. As the Wine Whore, I taste and review wine samples. Although I don’t claim to be an expert, I do it because I simply love wine, and want to share my experience with others. Like you, I believe that wine shouldn’t be elitist and snotty. It’s about friends, family, and enjoying life. I do my best to live this motto and inspire others to do the same.
Despite good intentions, people often criticize my motivation. They make accusations that my notes are not truthful purely because I don’t pay for the wine I taste.
As a fun way to prove that accepting free wine (which we both openly advertise on our sites) has no bearing on the honesty of reviews, I have extended you a friendly challenge or ‘Whore-Off’. The challenge consists of a blind taste test of previously reviewed wines to prove that our evaluations are the same regardless of the source of the wine.
After several days, I have to admit that I am very disappointed…
Not only have I not heard any response from yourself, I am also surprised at the negativity voiced on your forum. Of all people, I thought that you would be on board and welcome the challenge. Given your philosophy, this just doesn’t make sense.
Cheers!

Chance of Air
Wine Whore Review:
Clos La Chance Central Coast California Estate Malbec 2005 (click for more info)
- VS - This week, the rules have changed. My latest wine experiment has brought me into new territory. I have decided to pair two wines previously unlikely ever to have been put together in a taste test. Like last week's 'Can't Buy Me Love' poll, you chose which bottle should fill my glass, but instead of asking you to pick just one wine, I let you decide which PAIR of wines I should compare.
The theme: The Price of Air
Here's how it worked... you voted and I drank!
Details:
Acting as an uninformed consumer, I asked you to choose your favorite purely based on grape, label, and cost. Each pair included a low cost budget ‘Wise Wine’ selection and a more expensive version made from the same varietal. By comparing two different costing bottles of the same type of wine, I am hoping to see if price makes a difference in the amount of air and time required to decant a bottle of wine.
The pair you chose for me to compare:
- Malbec: Clos La Chance '05 ($35) vs Graffigna '06 ($10)

Before continuing, make sure to read the review of the less expensive selection aptly titled Malbec for Less Bucks. Unlike last week's cost difference, this pair was much closer. If you think that the higher priced wine won out... think twice. Keep reading to find out what you should consider next time you even think of choosing a wine solely based its price.
Never Wine Alone:
If you were with me for the virtual tasting via Twitter and Facebook you already have a good idea of how well this Cabby pair performed. If you missed it, take a minute to mark your calendar with next week’s tasting (Wednesday @ 6:30pm ET) and keep reading to see how it all went down.
Vintage Info:
"All the fruit for this wine was hand-picked and hand-sorted, ensuring that only perfectly ripe grapes are used in the blend, enhancing the varietal characer, balance and age ability of the wine." - Clos La Chance

Wine Whore Score:
My wine time tasting experience summarized by the senses...
To the eyes: Deep garnet hue shines like cherries in the sun.
To the nose: Hot waves of alcohol waft over a bed of plush fruit.
On the tongue: Shy and timid at first. Reluctant to reveal its enticing fruit. After relaxing, it exposes the hidden cherries, cola, tobacco, and hint of oak.
I was very surprised by this week's wine experiment. I expected the more expensive Malbec to taste better when first opened and then age gracefully. I was only half right. While the more expensive wine was able to age much longer than its less expensive counterpart, I actually enjoyed the cheaper bottle better during day 1. Because of its capacity to survive being opened longer, the more expensive Malbec did taste much better on day 2.
This is by no means a scientific experiment. There are so many factors that go into taste especially when it comes to decanting and aging. However, I did learn two important lessons.
- 1) Just because a wine costs more does not mean it has to taste better when first opened or at any time for that matter.
2) More complex wines (which typically cost more) tend to be able to retain their personalities and in some cases even get better with air.
Ultimately it all comes down to drinking what you enjoy and enjoying what you drink. The next time you open your favorite bottle of wine, leave some for another day and see how it evolves... you may learn something new about an old favorite.
Cheers!

Wine Whore Review:
"Without passion for wine, there would be no passionate wine…" -TWW
While the chance to drink free wine is an enormous perk, the decision to become ‘The Wine Whore’ fundamentally arose from my passion to honor those individuals who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of their true love (my story). Today I would like to honor one such individual and extend a friendly challenge.
"I want to make sure this generation of wine drinkers isn't élitist and snotty. I want it to be about family and bringing people together." -Gary Vaynerchuck
To be a Wine Whore, you must love wine and dedicate your life to this passion. Gary Vaynerchuk captures this essence with his pioneering, multi-faceted approach to personal branding and business. Not only did he build his family’s local wine business into a national industry leader, he also has a popular video blog about wine called Wine Library. Already labeled “Social Media Sommelier”, I would like to proudly extend the him the title of 'Wine Whore'.
Gary and I have a lot in common. We both welcome the opportunity to expand our palates while sharing our experiences with others. We both aim to demystify the world of wine, albeit in our own unique ways. We also both accept press samples in exchange for reviews.
- VS -

I challenge you to a Whore-Off !!!
The goal:
- Prove that accepting free wine samples does not alter the honesty/integrity of wine reviews.
The challenge:
- Three previously reviewed wines from each contender will be chosen.
- A blind taste test will be performed.
- Reviews and scores of the blind tasting will be compared to the original scores given.
The winner:
- Whichever contender gets closer to the original marks during the blind taste test.
The location:
- TBD

Wine Whore Review:
As the Wine Whore, I really enjoy drinking wine, but I also get a kick out of cool wine gadgets. My favorite accessories are those that are impressive looking and also serve a purpose. That's why I was excited when my friend Cheryl introduced me to a wine gadget that I had never seen before...
What if there was an earth friendly way to sip wine without staining your teeth? Cheryl showed me how I could drink wine through a glass straw specifically designed for a slow sip. This straw targets the wine while also helping to avoid teeth staining.
I have to admit, at first I was very skeptical. I was too afraid of messing with my wine tasting experience. After a month of procrastination, I finally gave it a try.
The verdict: This wine gadget will change the way people drink their favorite beverages, INCLUDING wine. Not only do these straws look cool, but they are also a fun way to drink your favorite beverage.

While I don't know if I will be completely converting my wine sipping ceremony to include these glass straws, I will definitely be sipping all kinds of other beverages from them. I can see it now... everyone will be so jealous when they see me whip out one of these bad boys at the next party. There is even a small carrying case so I don't have to worry about breaking it in my pocket. This is especially helpful when any sort of alcohol is involved.
Want to be a hit at the next party?
These glass straws are sustainable, reusable, and even include a Lifetime Guarantee Against Breakage. Get one of your own by visiting GlassDharma today!

Rominger West Yolo County California Syrah 2005 (click for more info)
Taste Score = 8/10 Points
Enjoyability Score = 8.5/10 Points
Overall Score = 8.25/10 Points (Additional stats below)

Rominger West uses grapes from Yolo County Vineyards
You won't find gun slinging cowboys in this West. No Billy the Kid or Butch and Sundance here. Instead you will find great wine made a foundation of excellent grapes farmed from Yolo County, CA. This version of the West is produced by a small family-owned winery in Davis, CA called Rominger West Winery.
The story of the West:
"Rominger West Winery is a small, family-owned winery nestled in the quaint town of Davis, CA. At Rominger West, we are striving to build a sustainable business, integrating the production of artisan wines with our responsibility to the community, care for the environment, and support for the economic viability of rural Yolo County. We are pursuing these goals through the use of sustainable farming practices, an emphasis on local conservation, reuse of resources, and a long term focus on the impacts of our actions. Sustainable farming increases the biodiversity in our vineyard soils, improves the health of the vines and produces more flavorful grapes."

Vintage Info:
"A medium bodied, elegant Syrah with dark fruit and earthy aromas, silky, ripe fruit and black pepper flavors on the palate, and a long sweet finish. This is a versatile wine that you will enjoy with a wide variety of foods now, and which will benefit from few months of bottle aging." –Rominger West
Recommended Food Pairing:
I would consider this wine flexible and friendly towards most food. It would compliment peppered red meats, sausage, stews, and barbecue exceptionally well.
My only words of caution- Avoid pairing this wine with fish... this pairing is not a good idea!

- I was off this weekend so decided to stay home. I stayed in yesterday watching movies. Opened up a bottle of Columbia Crest Two Vines Cabernet Sauvignon. It was okay, had better. Going to finish it tonight.:)
There is something about sleeping in, watching television, and wrapping up the day with a bottle (or two) of vino that just makes a great weekend! With all of the hustle and bustle, it can be so nice to get a break!

- I did my book signing yesterday and combined it with a friend's 60th bday and also a wine tasting. We had:
White Cottage Ranch (Howell Mt.)Sangiovese 2000
Lewis Wines - Alec's Blend 2000
Ceago - unoaked Chardonnay - Lake County 2007
Rosenblum - Rousanne - 2004
O'Brien Family Vineyards - Seduction 2003
There were about 70 people at the event over 5 hours. Not everyone drank wine, but those that did finished the bottles I opened. I had the rest of a case from my cellar available, but never needed to open it.
That sounds like a lot of fun... a book signing, birthday party, AND wine tasting! How come I wasn't invited?!? I did notice that you enjoyed a bottle of O'Brien Seduction. This is one of the three bottles that will be given away to one lucky winner of the Free Wine Giveaway. Make sure to tweet to win! In any case, this sounded like a great way to celebrate the weekend... good wine, a reason to celebrate, and good friends!

I had the latest Dr Loosen Riesling, just a lovely wine, wonderfully aromatics, a seductively sweet fruit palate and a dry crisp finish and a so so Cabernet Merlot from the Brands family in the Coonawarra.. it was good for the money
I really need to get into more Rieslings. Although I have had many, I just haven't found that one that I really love. The one you are describing sounds like it would be right up my alley. I'll have to give it a shot!

- Our neighbors purchased 120 bottles of different wines before moving here from Italy a few years back. They have been so great in sharing their stash with us, knowing I'm a wine whore. I can't pronounce any of them because they are all in Italian, but I have never had better wines either! And come to find out, they are all the cheap brands: ) This weekend we sampled Sovrana and Principe Di Corleone. Thank God for great neighbors, and even greater wine!!
First of all, it is very nice to hear the wine stories from a fellow wine whore! :) Second of all, you have to let me know if any homes available in your neighborhood since this sounds like where I should be living. It's really cool to hear that you can find a great wine for not a lot of money in Italy. I'll have to spend more time on this region!

Hello Sebastian! After last weekend's epic wine journey, it sounds like you have done it yet again. Summer is such a great time for white/rose wines that get neglected during the frigid winter months. - My wife had a 54th birthday this weekend with a friend of hers. We had 4 couples celebrating the 2 birthdays so I decided to bring out a special bottle - a 2001 O'Brien Estate Merlot 3L that I had been saving. This was the first large format bottle I have ever drunk. I had always heard that large formats age at 1/x the rate of a 750ML, where x is the number of 750s to fill the large format bottle. I had recently had an O'Brien Estate 2001 Merlot 750ML, so I was curious as to the comparison.
At first, the wine from the 3L seemed slightly acidic and I was less than impressed. But then it started opening up in the glass and in the bottle, and by the second glass it had transformed into an amazing wine. I was impressed with the 3L format, which by the way, came with a wax capsule. The secret to opening a bottle with a wax closure is to ignore the wax - just put a corkscrew straight through it and pop off the wax. If you try to cut it off, you will likely cut your thumb in the process.
Happy birthday to your wife!
That's so funny that you mention how to open the wax capsule. I could have used this advice a week ago. While trying to open a bottle with this type of enclosure, I completely slaughtered my finger with a pairing knife. It hurt to type all week! :(
This comment gets kudos for this reason as well as the fact that you were enjoying a bottle of O'Brien wine that is coincidentally part of the Wine Whore Giveaway (although not the 1.5L size) Isn't it funny how much air plays a part in changing the character of a bottle of wine! This week's experiment on The Price of Air should be interesting.
Cheers!
Thank you all sharing your wine stories with me and all of the other wine lovers who are out there! Keep 'em coming!
Cheers!

Does the cost of a bottle determine how long it needs to breathe?
Last week I worked to dispel this myth that cost equals quality. This week, I have decided to put this theory to another test. For this week's poll, I am asking you to again decide which pair to compare but I have added a new element to the experiment. Instead of just comparing the winning pair, I will also see how cost affects the ability to decant a wine. Each pair includes a low cost budget ‘Wise Wine’ selection and a more expensive version made from the same varietal. By comparing two different costing bottles of the same type of wine, I am hoping to see if price makes a difference in the amount of air and time required to decant a bottle of wine.
Like last week's poll, I am not going to provide vintage information or any other detailed wine info. Instead, I am only noting the pricing of the selections chosen. Acting as an uninformed consumer, choose which one is your favorite purely based on label and cost by voting for your choice in the poll located at the top of this page.

I am excited to announce that I have found my long lost Wine Whore twins. Where have they been hiding all of these years? Of all places, I found them half way around the globe in South Africa. Okay, we aren't REALLY related, but we DO share a love for the grape. Their name: The Wine Bandits
Here's what they are up to this week:
The Wine Bandit Mission:
Discover more about great South African wines by talking to wine makers, demystify complicated wine subjects, having a good laugh the whole way through, making wine accessible and entertaining.

Like last week's 'Old Vine New Wine' poll, you chose which bottle should fill my glass, but instead of asking you to pick just one wine, I let you decide which PAIR of wines I should compare.

The Cabernet Sauvignon pair you chose for me to compare:
$60 versus $16 is quite a price difference... does the Sonoma Creek wine even stand a chance? Think twice, there is an important lesson to be learned by this taste test. Keep reading to find out what you should consider next time you even think of choosing a wine solely based its price.

My wine time tasting experience summarized by the senses...
To the eyes:Deep ruby red accompanied by sediment lackadaisically lingering in the bottle.
To the nose: Licorice infused black cherry cola with a hint of vanilla tobacco wrapped in leather and spiced with a pinch of dirt.
On the tongue: Buckets of soft yet expressive fruit elegantly hold tight with a complex and balanced woody grip.
On the finish: Delayed silky finish with ideal acidity holds it together while refreshing the palate
While the Hawkes Cabernet was superior in taste and enjoyability, the Sonoma Creek Cabernet held solid ground. Although Hawkes scored a 9.5 in both categories, Sonoma Creek was not far behind with its respectable scores of 8 and 8.5 respectively.
Ok, so now you may be thinking that the more expensive wine always wins. Not the case! In the end, when you compare the total scores across all categories for these two wines, Sonoma Creek actually came out ahead!
Why would I ever spend for the more expensive bottle? What made the Hawkes Cab so special?
It really came down to character of the wine. I'm not talking about its ability to charm a crowd or tell witty jokes. I'm talking about its ability to keep you guessing with every sip. Although both wines were enjoyable and well made, there was just a little extra something in the Hawkes that made it soar above the competition. Each sip revealed a new characteristic, trait, or sensation. When the bottle was empty, it left me wanting more. The next day, I woke up and wished I had another bottle. It's just magically addictive!
Is it worth spending almost four times the price of the comparison Wise Wine selection?
In my opinion, every bottle of wine has its place. Some bottles are more expensive and should be reserved for special occasions whereas other bottles are reasonably priced and make a great companions to every day drinking. What really matters is that you find the bottle that fits your mood, needs, and wallet at any particular moment.
While it is okay to have a regular fling with an inexpensively Wise Wine, taste this Hawke and you'll be convinced that sometimes you CAN buy love!
Cheers!

Wine Whore Review:
"Life is like playing a violin solo in public and learning the instrument as one goes on." - Samuel Butler
When it comes to learning the instrument of life, one man has done the equivalent of the drum solo "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (substitute wine for the hallucinogenics, of course!). Paul Brasset's career as a winemaker in the Healdsburg area began in 1978 when he helped start one of my favorite wineries, Clos Du Bois.
Since then, Paul has made his mark in the wine industry through his work at the following wineries:
Is that all? Did I forget one?
Today, Paul's winemaking career is still going strong. You can find him working as a consultant winemaker for Bluenose Wine where he applies his industry experience by pursuing his passion for Zinfandel. He has also opened “Hudson St. Wineries”, a new cooperative tasting room with five other wineries in Healdsburg.
Paul admits that his heritage inspired the funny name for his Blue Zin...
"Paul was born in Nova Scotia, where the people are known as Bluenoses. The lore goes back many years, perhaps relating to the fishing boats that had blue painted bows, or the Bluenose potatoes which were imported and then distributed from there. His connection is to the famous Bluenose fishing schooner which can be seen on the Canadian dime. As a sailor and Nova Scotian, it seemed like a perfect fit."
As a followup to the 2005 release which was acclaimed by Wine Enthusiast, he is proud to have just released his Bluenose 2006 Sonoma County Zinfandel. Paul believes this vintage is even better than last year's version.
Lucky for me, I have the chance to try both!
I'll be tasting the following wines crafted by Paul Brasset for a side by side comparison between the two vintages:
Bluenose Dry Creek Valley California Zinfandel 2005
Bluenose Sonoma County California Zinfandel 2006
Stay tuned for the wine review comparison of these selections!

Wine Whore Review:
The best way to enjoy wine is in the company of friends and family. As a huge fan of tasting events, my favorite bottles are those I have had the opportunity to share with others. My favorite social gatherings are wine tasting parties. These parties are a perfect way to enjoy many different wines while also having fun with friends.
I want to have a wine party but I don't know where to begin?
Putting together a wine party can take a lot of planning and research but now there's someone to help. Thanks to the Traveling Vineyard and my friend Kiersten, I am excited to announce that anyone can easliy host a wine party with their friends. What better way to kick back and have a good time, than inviting several bottles of great wine to the party!
Ask Kiersten how you can have your own tasting party. She can also help you if you are looking to use your knowledge of vino to make some extra dough. Just make sure to tell her that the Wine Whore sent ya! ;)
Make every bottle taste better, share it with others!
Cheers!
